The ring bearing pillow dates back to ancient Egyptian times, when jewels were displayed on rare decorative pillows during a wedding. It became common in Europe because of the ring exchange during the wedding ceremony – that's why the ring bearer became a significant part of the ceremony. The tradition merged, leading to the pillow being used as the transporting vessel for the rings.

If you're having a ring bearer in your wedding, it is common to ask a younger male family member between 4-10 years of age. Ring bearers are usually paired with flower girls, who are around the same age who walk down the aisle together as part of the processional.

Some couples will use fake rings on the pillow for the bearer to carry and the best man and maid of honor will carry the actual rings. If you decide to use the real rings on the pillow, ensure that the wedding rings are securely tacked down to the pillow to prevent them from being lost.

Having a ring bearer is a great way to involve young family members in the wedding ceremony and to teach them about the meaning of a wedding. If the bride or groom has a son from a previous relationship, or a younger sibling, this gives the child a chance to feel involved.

Always include the ring bearer in the rehearsal.  Having a rehearsal with the children will help them feel comfortable in the role and familiarize them with wedding procedures.
